Hobo Bread
Recipe file created January 16, 2000.
Ingredients
My Mom made this when we were kids. We liked the idea of cooking it in old tin cans. It seemed exotic.
Preheat oven to 350 F. Take 7 - 14 ounce tin cans and grease thoroughly (or use loaf pans). In a large bowl, pour hot water over raisins. Stir in baking soda and mix well. Add margarine. Mix while still hot. Now add the balance of ingredients. Fill cans about half full and bake 50 to 60 minutes. Cool in the cans. Freezes well.
NOTE:
I remember my mother washing and saving vegetable cans for a few weeks in preparation for this recipe. We were all excited about this unusual cooking method and could hardly wait for the day to come when she made this special bread. We weren't disappointed.-- Rox
